Hello,

Please allow me to preface this post with a disclaimer. This is only a poll. I will not respond to requests for pricing information, product availability, order status, or order entry unless I am paying for advertising space with lhoti.com. To violate this policy would be nothing short of stealing, and I will not knowingly steal from anyone. With that said…

Is there any interest in a steam-powered electric generator system for remote areas? This would be a newly manufactured ‘old fashioned’ steam donkey engine attached to an electric generator in the 2Kw to 30Kw range. This unit would not come with the steam boiler unit itself. It would consist of the steam engine and the generator only. The main reason for this is liability. Various regions have strict guidelines for liability when it comes to steam boilers. A secondary reason is boiler inspection requirements. Again, various areas have different requirements for steam boiler inspection. The final reason is that of product variation. Some people would want a gas-fired boiler, others would want coal-fired, and others yet would want either oil or wood-fired. Some would only require a 30 gallon, others might require 100 gallons, and a few might want the 1,000 gallon size. That’s a lot of different types of boilers to deal with!

Thank You in advance for your responses!

Hello Jtilsond,

I am sorry to say that the poll showed little or no interest in this idea. I have attempted to send you free blueprints for building a very small steam engine. I am sorry but the board limits the size of files to well under the 5.5Mb size of the .zip file that I tried to send.

I suppose that it would have been wise to ask if you either know a machinist or do machine work yourself before trying to send the plans anyway. If you do then we'll find a way to make it work. The files are in both .dfx and .bmp format for the most part. If you do not own a copy of AutoCad then you can always download the free utility from AutoDesk called VoloView Express. VoloView will allow you to view and print existing files, but it will not allow you to make changes to the designs.

As for putting this particular plan into production, I think that I'll wait until after I go Salmon fishing in Alaska this year. I'll be doing about a two week back-country excursion after that and I hope to find out then if there's any real interest. I have noticed that many, if not most, of the articles and posters in the LHOTI bases are 'geared' toward prefabricated and even milled 'log' homes. I think that the whole steam power thing appeals more to the DIY type. And, if experience has taught me anything it's that Alaskans are the DIY type for the most part.

Please let me know if these plans are of interest to you. If others request them as well, I'd be happy to post them to this base as long as the Webmaster will provide a space for them.

Best Regards

Kyle I absolutely want to take advantage of such a generous offer.

I would provide email and surface mail address...whatever works.

I am a dyi and so is my brother. We made ourselves a band mill recently that will saw a 36inch log 24 feet long....actually we can add track for any length. It works like a charm with a 13 horse Brigs. He is an expert welder and mechanic. I have no doubt that we could do it easily.

Thanks again.
John
