View Full Version : New England Log Home Spring Fling

We have been talking about getting folks together some place in New England this spring. North Conway, NH seems to be an area where there are a number LHOTI-ites close by. My schedule with my new job will not allow me to get north for much this spring or summer (big project due in August).
So, if there is to be a Spring Fling some one else will have to pick a date and find a location. Sorry I can not follow through with this. :(

Our log home is still just a twinkle in our eyes, but I would be happy to help organize some kind of get-together for folks in the Mt. Washington Valley, though it will not be the same without Brad's combination of charm and log home experience. :-) It can be at someone else's log home, and I'll take care of logistics, or I can come up with a location. Maybe something over the Memorial Day weekend? If not, then maybe over the 4th of July weekend -- June will be too buggy in the valley this year; the black flies will love all the water standing around after this terrific snowy winter!

Hi Sharon,
You're a trooper to offer to do the logistics. If no homes open up,
any thoughts on an afternoon or lunch/dinner at one of the hotels in the area. The Mt. Washington is great or the Balsams at Dixville Notch might be a bit closer for Canadians in the North East.
I think swapping stories/experiences with other log home owners/builders and future log owners would be invaluable. I hope we can keep the candle lit that Brad started.

I would love to think that I could make it to The Event still. All depends on when this can be done. Memorial Day weekend anyone? I might be crazy enough to drive to Maine for the weekend for this.
Actually, I will trade my work schedule with anyone right now ;)

If folks prefer a house venue to a restaurant I'd be glad to offer
my place in Jackson. Perhaps a semi-organized pot luck? I could provide the hot course. Those who have to travel can bring something easier. My only limitation is seating. I could fit several picnic tables on the covered porch. Sharon, you've seen the place. Unless there is wind driven rain, that should not be a problem by Memorial Day. Plenty of room outside if it's nice.

I welcome any excuse to go to the Mt. Washington Hotel (why wasn't I alive and fabulously weathy in the early 1900s!), and we've been meaning to go to the Balsams for four or five years now... Maybe this year. I hesitate to suggest them for a log home gathering only because I don't know of log homes in those areas, whereas there is a nest of them in the North Conway/Jackson area, and I was hoping for a few other people to give me courage to go knock on their doors and ask for a tour.
However, if Bob is willing to have his log home serve as our picnic ground, I would vote for that. It's in Jackson, NH -- a great location in terms of being easy to get to, having plenty of places to pick up food, etc. And, Bob's log home is terrific and would motivate those who have not yet built (namely, moi), while being close enough to several other log homes down in N. Conway such that we potentially could go on a log home tour and then end up back at Bob's for a pot-luck lunch or dinner. Also, I could see if a couple of log home builders who work in the N. Conway area might show us some works in progress or just come have lunch/dinner with us and give advice if asked for it.
Hopefuly, Bob will not be insulted if we descend on his porch and promptly turn our backs on him to admire his views of Big George.
Should we say the Sunday afternoon of Memorial Day weekend? I personally am very flexible as to when we'd do this, as I think I'll still be on maternity leave and will have forgotten the concept of "work schedule," but I think we should pick some date, so we can see if we can get enough folks together to achieve critical mass.
COme to think of it, though, Bob, if you want to commit your house, you should pick a date that's most convenient for you.

I think getting together is a great idea. Sunday of Memorial Day is fine as would be the 4th of July weekend. If this becomes an annual tradition we would like to volunteer our house of 2004. We are hoping to be in by July, Memorial Day is out of the question. It was a tough winter, but with a break in the weather comes more progress. Our computer crashed so we are just now getting back into action. Has anyone contacted Aaron? I lost his email. If no one has his address I would be happy to drop by and leave amessage when plans are decided.

Sharon, Dave, Doug-
Memorial Day Sunday is fine by me. That's May 25 if I'm reading the calendar correctly. We'll all have to work on Brad. Perhaps we should fly Maestro in also, just to keep the conversation lively?
Doug- You can find Aaron's address if you go back into the archives. I'll make sure he knows about it if he's not tuned into this thread.

Well, I have added an entry on my calendar on May 25th, 2003 for "Spring Log Fling 2003". I sure hope I can make it but it will be hard. I am off to San Francisco for the next weekend. Two trips in a week will be tough. But, OOOOoooooo do I want to get to Jackson.
I can see this being an annual thing. Sign me up for "Spring Log Fling 2004".
I have some e-mail addresses and can send a notice to folks with a link to this thread.

Based on how this winter has been going I do not think they will be thawed out by Memorial Day. Last I heard there was about 2 feet thick ice still there. But the snow was melting fast. With the frost in the ground so far down Mud Season will be (is) a tough one.
Mud Season:
The ground thaws in the road as the packed snow melts making mud. Then the melted snow wants to seep down through the ground into the groundwater but it can't because the ground is frozen. Now the ground can be frozen 4-6 feet down because this was a tough winter. So, the mud gets thick and will be there till the frozen ground thaws all the way through allowing the melting snow to run off.
Lots of mud.

Hi everyone,
Life's been kind of crazy for the last few months and I haven't been here in quite a while. Thanks to Sharon A for emailing and letting me know about this thread. MaryAnn and I would love to be part of this get together. Also, thanks to Bob for offering up his home. Depending on how many people are planning on attending we can certainly use our house as a backup to Bob's. We'll be there for the long weekend so just let us know what time to show up. Our landscaping isn't done but people are welcome to stop by for a tour. We love showing off our new home and answering questions. Looking forward to meeting everyone face to face.
