If you are ever in Augusta County, Va and you are looking for a place to visit, I'd recommend the Frontier Culture Museum in Staunton, VA. It's a wonderful place to visit to see actual working frontier farms.
Their website has an article on how one of their farmhouses was orginally constucted. Since it's a log home, I thought someone here might enjoy reading it:

It really makes my project pale in comparison........I can't imagine building our log home without power tools! I also learned that 'chinking' is the wood placed between the logs and 'daubing' is the mortar spread over the chinking. For the past two months I thought I was chinking......nope, it's called daubing!! Ya learn something new everyday! :D
