What products are being used to clean your toilets? I hate to use strong chemicals because of the septic system.

Aunt Pearl,
Try "Tang". I heard it will even remove hard water stains. I have not tried it myself yet. You also may want to check out a Organic food store, they may offer several products.

When I was in college as a forestry student, we took courses that included soil science and land use. We spent some time on sewage disposal systems. I recall your exact question being answered.

The volume of chemical you use to clean your toilet, and other household needs for that matter (bleach for one), is very diluted once it gets into a 1000 gallon septic tank. Although it is important for the anerobic bacteria to work and stay active in a septic tank, the chemicals normally used in a household do not adversely effect the septic tank activity. Each person typically accounts for the use of something like 60 gallons of water per day, times the number of people in your household, and the 1/2 cup of cleaner each week, more or less, is not very significant.

I have even thought about mixing Tang and those new "OXY Clean" type powders to see how it will work. Who knows,
it may be just the ticket.

Aunt Pearl,
I just returned for the labortory...I mean lavatory. I tried the OXY cleaners with different combonations of cleaners and other items from the house. The whole time the wife just snickering.
I can tell you I have one very clean toilet right now. The bad news is the hard water stains are still there. The wife says she knows of a product that will remove the stains and it works great. Hmmm... why she never said anything earlier I will never know. I will be heading to the hardware store in the morning to get some. I will keep you posted on how the water swirls.

Thanks Patrick and Mike,

"How the water swirls", sound like a soap opera. I feel much better about my weekly scrubbing with all your science behind it. I will check the local health food store for something organic to use, but won't worry if I have to occasionally use the chemical.

Aunt Pearl,
After much scientific study my research has came up with this:
Drink the "TANG". It had no more cleaning ability than the elbow grease I was using. I modified it with the OXY type cleaners with the same results. It works fine for normal cleaning, but not on water stains.
It in straight form got some stange looks from the dog. Her breath has improved ! Though she now thinks the toilet bowl is a offering to the "Dog Goddess".
While I seemed to have been chasing my tail, the wife and the dog are amused. Now if I could only stop chasing the cats...:D

Yuck! Don't drink the Tang! Or give it to the poor dog either! Go get you some real orange juice!!! :D

(Though I do remember that HOT Tang is pretty tasty, can't do that with OJ, though it's just sugar water!!)

Give it to the dog? Heck that goof ball thing thinks I am flavoring the water for it. I am just letting it soak. It has a water dish, but no...it sneaks in and goes for it. :D

Well, I'm just glad I have a short dog who CANNOT have toilet breath, she can't reach. Now, Burt's Bees has a lovely breath freshner for dogs. Mine likes it and she doesn't gag me when she comes over for a kiss! :D
